Maritime Coast
Safe harbors and deep-water ports gave rise to working waterfront communities all along the coast. In the center of the North Shore, Port Jefferson anchors the Maritime Coast. Today the communities retain the influence of a seafaring past, amid a vibrant contemporary setting.
"Harbors, coves, inlets and wetlands here were home to ship captains and ship builders. Sloops & schooners built here were the trucks of their day carrying Long Island's produce to market. Our brigs and barks travelled all over the world. Colonial and Victorian homes here are comfortable and understated. The pace of life is slower and the many wooded paths and secluded coves still beckon explorers and provide a refuge for wildlife."
